If you’re a Canadian expecting to receive payments from a company located in the U.S., you’ll need to submit a W-8BEN form. This applies for the Medium Partner Program, BlueHost Affiliate Program, and more! The W-8BEN form can look intimidating at first, but it’s actually pretty simple. It only takes a few minutes. And then you’ll be off to getting paid!

Here’s what you need to do.

After filling out your basic identification info (name, citizenship, address, etc), you’ll be asked for additional information.

U.S. Social Security Number (SSN)/ Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

Leave this blank and under Foreign Tax Identifying Number, enter your Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN).

Tax Treaty

For Canada, the relevant section is 12.3 (sometimes it’ll just be listed as 12). The corresponding withholding rate is 0%.

At the end, you’ll be asked to provide the date and signature. And that’s it!
